Stevieontay Burnz is taking an unconventional route through the music industry, combining his background as an entrepreneur with his connection to cannabis culture and a growing passion for recording and releasing music independently.
His relationship with music began long before he officially stepped into the role of recording artist. As a child, Burnz spent time around his father, watching him play drums and experiencing the energy of his father’s band. Those early experiences introduced him to music from a young age and eventually became part of the foundation for his own creative journey.
Before pursuing music professionally, Burnz was already focused on entrepreneurship. He founded The Southern Maryland Experience, a cannabis and hemp brand that began in Southern Maryland and later expanded into North Carolina. Building a business in an industry that continues to evolve gave Burnz firsthand experience with adapting to changing circumstances, developing a brand independently, and finding ways to move forward despite challenges.
Today, he is applying those same principles to his music career.
Turning Life Experiences Into Music
Burnz’s developing catalog reflects an artist who is allowing his own experiences to shape his sound rather than attempting to fit into one specific category.
Songs such as “Hard to Breathe” and “Midnight on the Dash” explore different creative directions, while his latest release, “Wax Wizardry,” brings listeners closer to the cannabis culture that has been part of his entrepreneurial journey.
Released September 30, “Wax Wizardry” draws inspiration from concentrates, hash, extraction, and the culture surrounding cannabis craftsmanship. The track provides another example of how Burnz connects elements of his real-world experiences with his music.
At the same time, Burnz sees his artistic identity as broader than cannabis culture alone. His songwriting also touches on relationships, ambition, business, pressure, personal experiences, and the challenges that come with building something independently.
An Independent Artist With an Entrepreneurial Mindset
The same determination that helped Burnz develop his business ventures is now influencing the way he approaches his music career.
Instead of waiting for a traditional record-label system to create opportunities, Burnz is taking an independent approach to developing his music catalog, branding, visuals, media presence, and audience.
His latest release is also part of a larger sequence of music planned for October. Following “Wax Wizardry” on September 30, “Married to Mary” is scheduled for October 7, followed by “Terp Temple” on October 14 and “The Experience” on October 21.
Together, the releases contribute to the larger Burnz and Beyond project and give listeners an opportunity to see the direction his artistic identity is taking.
Creating a Lane of His Own
For Stevieontay Burnz, the objective extends beyond releasing individual songs. He is working to build a recognizable identity that brings together his entrepreneurial background, creativity, personal experiences, and connection to cannabis culture.
The Southern Maryland Experience remains an important part of that story as Burnz continues developing the brand while simultaneously expanding his work as an independent recording artist.
His path from Southern Maryland entrepreneur to emerging musician may not follow the traditional route into the music business. Instead, the unconventional nature of his journey has become part of his story.
With “Wax Wizardry” now available and additional releases planned throughout October, Burnz is continuing to develop his sound, expand his creative catalog, and establish his presence on his own terms.
Rather than waiting for a lane to open for him, Stevieontay Burnz is creating one of his own.
