In the world of basketball, success is often measured by wins, statistics, and championships. For Coach Jonathan Barfield, however, the true measure of success extends far beyond the scoreboard. A former athlete, accomplished coach, educator, entrepreneur, and community leader, Barfield has dedicated his journey to developing young athletes not only into stronger basketball players, but also into disciplined confident, and community-minded individuals.
From his roots in Memphis, Tennessee, to his growing influence throughout Middle Tennessee, Barfield’s story reflects a powerful combination of athletic experience, education, leadership, and service.
From Athlete to Mentor
A graduate of Tennessee State University, Barfield developed his competitive foundation through years of playing basketball at a high level. His experience includes competing as a collegiate athlete as well as participating in The Basketball League (TBL) and EuroBasket.
Those experiences provided more than an understanding of the game. They shaped his perspective on preparation, perseverance, teamwork, and the importance of mentorship—principles that would eventually become central to his coaching philosophy.
Rather than allowing his playing career to define the limits of his involvement in basketball, Barfield transformed his experience as an athlete into an opportunity to guide the next generation.
Inspired Athletes: Turning Experience Into Impact
As the CEO of Inspired Athletes, Barfield has created a basketball skills development platform focused on helping young players maximize their potential.
In addition to leading Inspired Athletes, Barfield has expanded his impact in youth basketball by accepting the position of Site Director with the National Youth Basketball Academy. Through this role, he continues to create opportunities for young athletes through skill development, mentorship, and structured basketball training.
Building Inspired Athletes also required strong community partnerships. Barfield developed a relationship with Pastor Tommy Clark, which provided access to gym space where he could train athletes and offer basketball skills development through his program. This partnership allowed Inspired Athletes to continue serving young players by providing a consistent environment for growth, learning, and improvement.
The organization has positively impacted more than 650 athletes across the Middle Tennessee area, demonstrating the scale of Barfield’s commitment to youth development.
His approach goes beyond improving shooting, ball handling, conditioning, and other technical aspects of basketball. Through Inspired Athletes, Barfield emphasizes confidence, discipline, accountability, perseverance, and personal growth.
For him, basketball serves as both a sport and a vehicle for preparing young people for challenges beyond the court.
A Coaching Career Defined by Development
Barfield’s coaching journey demonstrates consistent leadership across multiple programs.
As Lead Coach at St. Bernard Academy, he accumulated more than 55 victories between 2015 and 2023, with the team securing a third-place finish during the 2023 season.
His leadership continued at St. Christian Academy, where he served as Head Coach and recorded a 9–4 season in 2023, followed by an 11–4 record in 2024.
Barfield also contributed as an Assistant Coach at Montgomery Bell Academy, helping the program achieve a 14–4 record and a runner-up finish in the Wilco Tournament.
His coaching experience also includes involvement with the Vanderbilt Men’s Summer Program. Barfield further led his team to a second-place finish at the Vanderbilt Youth Camp, adding to his record of developing athletes in competitive environments.
More recently, he earned Runner-Up Championship honors with the Middle Tennessee Soldiers / Pro Skills Basketball, adding another accomplishment to a coaching career centered on competitive excellence and athlete development.
Education as a Foundation for Leadership
Barfield’s influence on young people has never been limited to basketball.
His professional background includes serving as an educator across Pre-K, lower school, and upper school departments in Nashville, Tennessee. This experience strengthened his understanding of how young people learn, develop, communicate, and respond to leadership.
Today, he serves as the Physical Education/Sports Coordinator at Nashville International Academy, where he is focused on developing a strong and sustainable sports program.
The combination of education and athletics gives Barfield a distinctive perspective. He understands that coaches are also teachers—and that some of the most important lessons taught through sports have little to do with winning a game.
Leadership Recognized Beyond the Court
Barfield’s impact has earned recognition in both professional and community circles.
A member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., he represents values connected to achievement, leadership, service, and community involvement. His accomplishments have also earned him recognition as a 40 Under 40 Honoree.
His journey and work have been highlighted through publications and media platforms including Morning on Main Street, Good News Magazine, Entrepreneur Impact, and Nashville Voyager.
His dedication to education is equally reflected in his academic accomplishments, including recognition on the Dean’s List and induction into an Honor Society.
Most recently, Visionary Magazine recognized Coach Jonathan Barfield among its Top Titan 2026: CEO Entrepreneurs, acknowledging his growing impact as an entrepreneur, mentor, and basketball development leader.

Through these features and media highlights, Barfield’s mission of developing athletes, empowering young people, and creating positive community impact continues to reach a wider audience.
Service Beyond Sports
Community involvement remains another important part of Barfield’s mission.
His volunteer and charitable efforts have included involvement with Hands On Nashville, Martha O’Bryan Food Bank, the Rachel Bell Community Service Program, Room to Read, donations supporting Goodwill and The Salvation Army, and helping feed individuals experiencing homelessness through the Nashville Rescue Mission.
These efforts reflect the same philosophy that guides his work with athletes: leadership carries a responsibility to serve others.
By incorporating community-minded values into his professional journey, Barfield demonstrates to young athletes that personal achievement becomes more meaningful when it creates opportunities to uplift others.
A Legacy Inspired by Family
Behind Barfield’s accomplishments is a deeply personal source of motivation.
His mission is connected to honoring the legacy of his grandmother, who passed away in 2023. Her memory has become part of the purpose driving him to continue mentoring, teaching, and creating meaningful opportunities for young people.
For Barfield, building a legacy is therefore about much more than collecting championships or individual recognition. It is about creating an impact that continues through the lives of the athletes and students he has influenced.
Developing the Next Generation of Champions
Coach Jonathan Barfield represents a modern definition of sports leadership—one that combines athletic experience, entrepreneurship, education, mentorship, and community service.
Through Inspired Athletes, his coaching positions, educational leadership, and service initiatives, he continues to create an environment where young athletes can develop both their abilities and their character.
His journey from Memphis athlete to respected coach and CEO demonstrates what can happen when experience is transformed into purpose.
As Barfield continues expanding his influence, his greatest achievement may ultimately not be measured by his own awards or win-loss records. Instead, it will be reflected in the generations of young athletes who leave his programs more prepared, more confident, and more determined to become leaders themselves.
Coach Jonathan Barfield is not simply developing better basketball players—he is helping build the next generation of champions, on and off the court.
